SMSFs and Social Security

With the spotlight in Australia firmly on inflation and the cost of living we’ve seen a number of announcements and measures introduced that provide some relief to age pension recipients and self-funded retirees. Rising interest rates usually mean rising deeming rates, however, the Government have sought to ease people’s minds by maintaining the existing social security deeming rates until 30 June 2024. That, plus the proposed changes to Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC) income thresholds, mean a greater portion of SMSF members may find themselves eligible for the CSHC, but equally may have them reviewing pre-2015 pensions to determine whether the existing grandfathering rules remain of value. It’s also an interesting time for those looking to downsize as they near or enter the retirement phase to understand the impact that a house sale may have on their age pension entitlement.

In this webinar we will look at the potential impact of changes to the CSHC, the impact that reducing the age of eligibility to the downsizer contribution may have and the benefits a well-executed re-contribution strategy can have on couples with a reasonable age gap between them. Of course, no social security webinar would be complete without an overall assessment of eligibility for the age pension.

Leaning Outcomes:

At the end of this webinar, participants will have an appreciation for:
• The existing qualification rules for the age pension
• How the asset and income test work with reference to accessing various benefits
• The impact of various contribution strategies in a post 1 July 2022 expanded contribution universe
• Commonwealth Seniors Health card eligibility and the pre-2015 grandfathering rules
